Saving America Citizens and Japan Surrenders

Part of the reason why Truman decided to drop the Atomic bomb on Japan was to save American lives. During the first day of fighting at Iwo Jima, there were more American casualties than D-Day. When America was readying their plans to invade the main islands, Japan was getting two million soldiers "...who were clearly prepared to defend their homeland to death. It was easy to believe estimates that an invasion would result in as many as a million American casualties, plus many more Japanese. The Bomb offered the chance of ending the war and saving lives..."

Before Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he warned Japan to surrender. This is a video of that.

In his powerpoint, Mr. Cullinan said

  • On August 10, 1945 Japan offered to surrneder.
  • Japan made it official by agreeing to Allied turns of surrender on August 14, 1945.
